Surprise Sugar Stars

Description

Basic sugar cookies with a cherry filling.

Ingredients

1 cup butter, softened
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup buttermilk
1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling
Icing:
2 Cups confectioners' sugar
2 to 3 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon, almond extract
Colored sugar, optional

Directions

In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and butter. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla.
Combine the dry ingredients: add to the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk.
Refrigerate for 2 hours.
